First Aid for Schools

The next one-day course with available places: 5th July  2013, Chorley, Lancs

Next Term: 9th October 2013, Chorley, Lancs.

All schools have legal requirements to provide adequate First Aid provision for the children, staff and visitors to the site, and whilst children are engaged in activities under the auspices of the school off the premises.

There are a number of courses that might adequately meet the needs of schools.

Feedback from a Headteacher:  'The staff you trained yesterday were all very vocal about how good the course was! They said they had never learned so much doing first aid training - so thank you!'

Emergency Aid Certificate - First Aid for Schools (6 hours)

This 6 hour course developed and provided by Lancashire First Aid Training Ltd covers everything that is in the syllabus of the Emergency First Aid at Work course, plus additional material that is required by Lancashire County Council to meet the needs of schools.  It covers incident management, care of the unconscious, airway management, adult and child CPR, bleeding, soft tissue injury, head injury, environmental hazards, common illnesses, first aid kits and recording requirements. This is undoubtedly the most appropriate course for school staff, but because it is more extensive than the EFAW course it does not have EFAW title.  The certificate is valid for three years.

Paediatric First Aid (12 hours, 2 days)

This course is a legal requirement for all schools and other establishments with Early Years pupils.  Every Early Years pupil must have immediate access to a member of staff holding a Paediatric First Aid Certificate at all times.  This means that activities off school premises must be accompanied by an appropriately trained individual, leaving another on the premises for other pupils.  Adequate numbers must be trained to ensure cover during staff study or sickness.

Should you require clarification on any of the above, or further information about our First Aid Training courses, please contact us and we will be very pleased to advise you.

First Aid at Work (3 Days, 18 hours)

It might be reasonable for each school to have a small number of individuals trained to the full 3 Day FAW standard to meet their legal obligations to provide such cover for the numbers of individuals congregated on a single site at any one time.  This is not because the site is particularly hazardous, but because there are large numbers of people on a large site.  The HSE provides specific guidance on how to estimate the number likely to be needed.  Lancashire First Aid Training Ltd would be happy to carry out the Hazard Assessment for you.

Emergency First Aid at Work (1 Day of 6 hours)

This course is considered adequate for workplaces where a hazard assessment demonstrates that it is not hazardous.  This means there is no heavy machinery, agricultural operations, moving machinery or other similar dangers.  It is the course of choice for almost all hotels (except kitchen areas), offices and shops and similar situations.  Some schools may be attracted to this course as it has HSE FAW status, however, it may not meet all of the needs identified by the school Risk Assessment.  The syllabus does not contain any specific reference to First Aid for children, nor does it cover the specific CPR protocols for children. The HSE does not permit the addition of any material to the core syllabus, making it less than ideal for teachers and other school staff.
